Supporting the educational needs of L’Allemand
Love for L’Allemand understands education is essential for the development of a community. To meet the need, a school was opened in 1987 to build an educational foundation for the young children of the area.
When Love for L’Allemand officially began in 2013, there were about 120 kids attending grades preschool through 6th grade with 8 teachers. To meet the educational needs as the kids passed from class to class, a grade was added each year through the 9th grade. Kids choosing to continue through the 12th grade can receive financial assistance from Love for L’Allemand to attend in a nearby city. Currently, the school serves about 200 students and employs 14 teachers, 3 administrators and 20 part time staff.
The hope of the school is that the students who are educated here will invest back into the local community. One example of this is Arry Corneille. After he graduated from the school of L’Allemand, he completed his education in Port de Paix and returned as a teacher at L’Allemand. Rudenson Eugene is another example who has completed his high school education, is currently enrolled in medical school in Cap Haitian, Haiti, and volunteers in the clinic on his breaks from school. Once he is finished with his education, he plans to return to work as a lab tech at the L’Allemand Clinic.
Improving educational standards is also a hope of the L’Allemand school. Currently, almost all of the teachers are taking afternoon classes to further their own education. This will continue to improve the quality of education provided by the L’Allemand school. In the past few years, students from L’Allemand have scored high on government testing.
